SWARA YOGA - Based on Shiva Swarodaya Shashtra

“SWARALAB” - THE SWARAYOGA WORKSHOP - RETREAT

Swar Yog - The Science of Nasal Breathing

What is Swara Yoga (Swar Yog)?

The word SWARA means the sound of the breathing through nostril and the word YOGA comes from yuj which means joining or union…thus Swara Yoga is the science of nasal breathing that increases awareness in a systematic manner and may lead the practitioner to the ultimate adventure, the enlightenment. Enlightenment is a stateless state where mind is absent and integration of energy happens because of the absent of the fragmentary mind.

Swara yoga is an ancient science which originated as a dialogue between Shiva and Parvati. It is of tremendous significance to modern scientific minded people as there are 395 sutras in the original script of Shiva Swarodaya Shashtra and many of these sutras are very significant for the quantification of awareness for the modern man. This science remained a secret for thousands of year but now made available since last 20 Years by GURUJI PREM NIRMAL for the sincere seekers interested in learning this sacred science given by non other than Lord Shiva himself!

By learning and practicing Swara Yoga on daily basis you can realign your self to the cosmic rhythms that help to improve health, well-being and natural healing process of the body. It also helps to increase one’s awareness.

Swara Yoga is different from Pranayama. Unlike Pranayama it goes much deeper through systematic study of breath that increases awareness about the nostril, the prevailing element in a moment ij that particular nostril and it also associates this awareness with that of thithi (the degree of Moon) the time of the day etc.

What are the advantages of learning Swara Yoga?

The Swara Yoga practices are basically to increase one's awareness and understanding of natural governing forces of life. It goes deeper into understanding governing ELEMENTS in each moment in a particular nostril which in turn decides our success in any thing that we do in that moment. As awareness deepens, it helps us to move from "samana" (mindfulness awareness) awareness to "unmana" (Beyond mind awareness) awareness. The most exciting aspect of Swara Yoga is that by observation of dominant nostril and the prevailing element in that nostril one can know a lot about the secrets of success in that moment and by learning to adjust the nostril and the element one can maneuver oneself to success in any activity at hand.

One of the simplest Swara Sadhana is to check the nostril while waking up. Turn to the dominant side and get up. Put your dominant nostril side foot first on the ground and start you day with full awareness of the moment. By doing so you align yourself with natural rhythm of the day and your entire day will be successful!

Other Advantage of Swara Yoga……

1. You learn to do right thing at right time.

2. You can bring balance & order in your life.

3. You learn to be relaxed & conscious of own state of being before starting an activity.

4. You learn to live in constant awareness of your inner & outer world.

5. You learn to attune to natural rhythms & universal laws for greater health & wellbeing.

6. Those who practice swara yoga never suffer from failure & discontent.

7. You learn how to change the vibrational pattern of the environment to your advantage.

8. Through the knowledge of swara yoga one can become free from all kinds of negative influences of one's destiny and can achieve heightened awareness.

10. The knowledge of swara yoga helps you to get liberated from the cycle of life & death.

The Art of Giving: Anna Daana - Gyaan Daana

There are three important sciences to be learnt by all seekers of truth.

(1) Science of Seva (Service)

(2) Science of Dhyana (Meditation)

(3) Science of Antahkarana (Causal body consciousness)

Here, the sequence is important. e.g. If you jump to second, the Science of Meditation and are not able to meditate, it means you have to prepare yourself by doing service of humanity in unconditional manner, to cleans yourself. Same way, you cannot understand the science of antahkarana without meditating long enough!

Let us understand what is Daana - Giving Unconditionally:
Daana is one of the virtues. It helps to unburden oneself from karma and helps to clean the subtle bodies. There are many things you can give in daana, but what is more important is to understand what to give to whom?

Scriptures say…Give…

Food to hungry (Bhukhe ko anna)

Clothes to naked (Nange ko kapda)

Knowledge to ignorant (Agyani ko Gyan)

Teach Pranayam / Kriyas to Knowledgeable (Gyani ko Prana)

Teach Dhyan (Meditation) to pranavan (the vital) (Pranavan ko Dhyan)

Give Gyaan (wisdom) to Dhyani (meditator) (Dhyani ko Gyan)

And be silent with a wise one to share his energy! (Gyani or Jnani does not need anything! Just share the silence!! Feel the energy field!!!)

Shashtras (Scriptures) also say that give daana to supatra (right candidate) only. Never give daana to kupatra (wrong candidate). But there is only one exception and that is about anna daana… Here you don’t have to see who is supatra and who is kupatra. Anna daana is for all. Anybody who is hungry can eat at an ashram and all have prasadam in the presence of the wise one without any discrimination!

All great masters served food to poor people around! Who so ever the person may be, weather saint or sinner, when you feed the hungry stomach, it is a virtue because the blessings (ashirvad) comes automatically! Sri Ramana Maharshi and Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, both were in favour of free food distribution to poor masses. And this activity goes on even today at Ramanashram and almost all branches of Ramakrishna Mission on daily bases.

It is well to give when asked, but it is better to give unasked, through understanding. All you have shall some day be given; therefore give now. Give with joy, and that joy is your reward. It is when you give of yourself that you truly give. ~ Kahlil Gibran

Anna daana is not limited to human beings. One needs to feed birds, animals, fish, ants… too! Masters operate form Sarvambhadraha (All pervading divinity – All auspiciousness – Seeing Shiva in all) state! They see GOD in everybody and everything!! Wherever the need is, it is to be taken care…

Anybody can do anna daana without any specific requirement on the part of giver. You can feed to ants, birds, fish, animals and human beings who are in need. Let it happen naturally. If you have the right intention, you will see and acknowledge the need and giving will happen naturally! That’s the art of giving. The act of cooking Khichari and feeding the needy with your own hands is far more superior than giving a big amount cheque to a charity organization. The reason here is your own involvement in the act of giving.

In hot summer afternoons, can you keep a pot of water in your garden for birds? In villages people feed grass to cows and it is considered as one of the best type of daana! Feeding to dogs, fish, birds, and ants is also mentioned in our scriptures and it is considered as virtuous deed.

It is better to energize the food before distribution. You can do so by giving your prana-shakti to food that can be channeled with right intention and with prayers with the feeling (bhava) of Sarve bhavantu sukhinaha (Let all be happy). This is really a beautiful way of anna daana and it needs to be experienced!

Bhandaras (free food distribution for all) is a part of Himalayan culture! It has spread all over India and abroad too! "Atithi devo bhava" is the way to treat everyone! Greetings are in the form of "Om Namo Narayana"... Seeing GOD in everyone and serving with unconditional love is the way of daana.

Similar aspects are there in almost all cultures and religions. You can see langar in all Gurudwaras. During the month of Ramadaan helping poor by giving Jakat is considered to be most auspicious.

Art of giving is experienced when you give in way that if you give with the right hand, your left hand need not know! That is considered to be the most superior daana. Some people expect their name to be engraved on the door of temples… that is considered as inferior daana. Our scriptures say that if the daana is exposed, the fruits of that good karma are gone! Hence the importance of gupt-daana.

Whom to give? Where to give? When to give?

You need not be worried about such things. You don’t have to go in search of big charity organizations. Just look around and you will find plenty of needy people. When you find a hungry man, don’t give money but give him food. That is the right act. If you see a bright student deprived of education because of lack of money, pay her tuition fees. If you see a sick patient dying because of lack of medical facilities, it is better to get his treatment done! If you have the right intention, you will have eyes to see the need and daana will happen automatically in right way!

Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime. ~ Chinese proverb

Donation should be given to help a person and increase the self esteem of the recipient. Hence it is better to teach fishing, instead of giving fish, as indicated in Chinese proverb. So it is better to give a sewing machine to a lady to make her independent and self sufficient rather than giving her food for a day. Also, sharing some interesting information and giving strategic help to a needy is far more superior danna than just offering food.

He who has spent has used; he who has collected has lost; but he who has given has saved his treasure forever. ~ Hazrat Inayat Khan

Is there wrong kind of daana?

Not exactly at the level of intention, but in certain circumstances it becomes wrong
e.g. Giving high calorie food to overweight person who is dieting!

Giving clothes to rich man… he will not wear it!

Giving knowledge to knowledgeable… You will land up in debate or arguments!

Teaching pranayam to Yogi… He doesn’t need it!

Teaching meditation to Dhyani… not necessary!

Quoting from scriptures to a Jnani… It’s not required!

What is considered to be highest kind of daana?

Only a Jnani is in a position to do this highest kind of daana by sharing his wisdom with those who are mumukshu. All Jnanies are interested in doing that but because they do not get mumukshus they come down to food distribution to masses. They build schools and hospitals for needy… Masses can see only this and give more money to their organizations and they have no option but to go for more charity activities. This is good and needs to be appreciated as it helps a lot to masses. But the best daana is that of sharing insights to create understanding and awareness in a mumukshu. This is the highest kind of Daana.

Sri Ramana Maharshi was a Jnani in true sense. Whenever a mumukshu approached him, he told him to enquire within (Who am I?) and also recommended to read scriptures like "Tripura Rahasya" and "Ribhu Geeta" to go deep within and contemplate on Self!

The next best is GYAN DAANA - to distribute the words of the master in any form. If one cannot do the sharing of one’s own wisdom, one can always share the master’s wisdom. It can be in any form. Modern ways are Books, Cds, e-mails, blogs, groups etc. In the times of Krishna and Buddha all these things were not there. Even bicycle was not there! But, if available, I am sure both of them would have used these facilities as both were Prince and advanced consciousness, compared to masses at that time or even our times!

Trek to Kedar Tal

We had plans to trek to Tapovan and we had taken proper permission from Govt. authorities well in advance. We spent a full day in Gangotri in preparation for this trek! Arranging for food items, porters and preparing ourselves for the journey with sticks, tents, sleeping bags and woolen clothes etc. In the morning we  went to Tapovan rout check post but we were refused the permission to go ahead as few people had lost their lives in accidents previous day. So, we had no option but to come back to ashram and relax. We planed to trek to Kedar tal on the next day.

We started from Ishavashya Ashram at about 8.30am as we were waiting for our foreigner friends to get govt permission for the trek. We crossed the wooden log bridge (Lakdi Pool) immediately and started the trek...

It is fairly steep trek right from the beginning and within a couple of hrs time we could see that usual pine and fir trees were missing and Bhojpatra trees were seen.

Pine trees appear only upto certain height....

Beyond that, Bhoj Patra Trees for some height...

Because of rainy season, we were lucky to see many waterfalls on the way! We continued our journey and reached Bhoj Khadak by about 2pm.

The last portion of the day-1 trek was the most difficult! Very liitle space on the slippery rocks...

As it started raining we decided to pitch our tents here for overnight halt. Michael from UK and Malvina  from Sweden joined us at about 5pm. Accupressure treatment by Sun Yogi Uma Shankarji and Satsang after dinner were common throuout this journey!

On day two we started early and with great enthusiasm we started trekking. The rain experience of previous day taught us the lesson to take advantage of good weather conditions and go as far as possible in the first half of the day as after 2pm uncertainty of weather conditions is very common in this region.

We had to cross many such streams on the way!

The trek was more steep today and also becoming dangerous at times. We reached Kedar Khadak and it started raining. This became our camping point for day two.

Day three we started moving early as we wanted to reach Kedar Tal before it starts raining! We enjoyed seeing Gauri Kund on the way.

And yes, we did reach there early and had nice refreshing bath in cold waters of Kedar Tal! Enjoying a cup of fresh herbal tea was so blissful, especially after cold water bath in Kedar Tal!

We got into tent by 5 pm; had early dinner and went to sleep to get up at 2.30am.

We had pitched the tent in such a way that we could see Kedar Tal from our tent. 2.30am to 4.30am we all were awake to see if other dimensional entities such as Apsaras and Devatas and Rishies come for bathing. We were ready with our cameras and yes we did capture few astral movements in our camera!
(Those pics will be soon uploaded on this blog...)

In the morning we got up at 6am but fog was so heavy we could hardly see anything around. Our hopes of photographing snow capped mountains started fading... But with the sunrise, things started changing and fog started clearing. Before leaving Kedar Tal we got very clear view of all the peaks and we were really happy to capture them in camera!

Return Journey from Kedat Tal to Ishavasyam Ashram...

Walking over the loose rocks...

Descending down was relatively easy and everyone wanted to reach ashram as early as possible! But we had to cross few dangerous landslide spots as early as possible!

What took us three day for upward journey; we completed the same in one day while coming down and reached the ashram in evening about 6pm. Even though our ankles and knees were tired and hurting, our spirits were soaring high as we could complete this difficult 18km trek safely.

Next day morning enjoyed Sun gazing Meditation with Sun Yogi Uma Shankarji and went to meet Lalita maiji, details of which are mentioned in the previous (Part-2: Gangotri Dhaam) blog.
Thank you!
